2010-11 NBA Season as Predicted by NBA 2K11

I thought it would be interesting to simulate a season in NBA 2K11 and see how it turned out.  The results are interesting to say the least, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few of the game's predictions come true.

After a jump, the results.

Western Conference:
1. Lakers
2. Spurs
3. Nuggets
4. Mavericks
5. Trailblazers
6. Jazz
7. Rockets
8. Grizzlies
***
9. Thunder
10. Warriors
11. Suns
12. Hornets
13. Timberwolves
14. Kings
15. Clippers

Eastern Conference:
1. Heat
2. Hawks
3. Celtics
4. Magic
5. Bulls
6. Bucks
7. Bobcats
8. Pacers
***
9. Knicks
10. Nets
11. Cavs
12. Sixers
13. Wizards
14. Raptors
15. Pistons

The Pistons and Raptors finished tied for worst in the league, with Clippers next, and Kings after.

All-Star Game:
West: Chris Paul, Kobe, Durant, Duncan, Al Jefferson, Deron Williams, Brandon Roy, Carmelo, Dirk, Kaman, Billups and Tyreke.
East: Rondo, Wade, LBJ, Bosh, Dwight, Joe Johnson, Amar'e, Stephen Jackson (!), Gerald Wallace, Josh Smith, Brook Lopez, Derrick Rose

The West won by 10 points.  Other than Stephen Jackson, I could definitely see all those players making the All-Star team though.

Season Ending Injuries:
The game predicts 4 players to get knocked out with season ending injuries. Gilbert Arenas, Jarrett Jack, and Andrea Bargnani all end up with Torn MCLs.  Jermaine O'Neal also has to sit out after breaking his Patella.  Arenas and O'Neal are both injury prone in real life, so good call there 2K.  Losing Bargnani and Jack would really suck for an already depleted Toronto team.

Awards:

  • MVP: LeBron James. The game has him averaging 25.9 PPG (on 48.5% shooting), 7.5 RPG, 6.0 APG, 2.0 SPG, and 1.4 BLK.  Those stats are a little lower than last year, but still ridiculous numbers, and the drop in statline can be accounted for by the fact that he's playing with Wade and Bosh.
  • RoY: John Wall. He doesn't match Tyreke's 20/5/5 but he does put up a nice 19/6/3 with 2 steals to boot.
  • 6th Man: Ramon Sessions.  I almost voted for Sessions myself in real life after watching how well he played in preseason.
  • DPoY: Josh Smith. He's really the only one who can legitimately challenge Howard in my opinion.
  • Most Improved: Terrence Williams.  I could see that happen as well, although I always hate when 2nd year players win it.  They're supposed to improve.
  • Coach of the Year: Erik Spoelstra. Meh. The game seems to give the award to whatever team has the best record, and I think almost any coach could succeed given LeBron, Wade and Bosh.
  • All-NBA 1st Team: Kobe Bryant, Monta Ellis (!), LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard.  Ellis is the only real surprise here, and while I think he'll have a career year, I don't think he'll be this good.
  • All-NBA 2nd Team: Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo, Amar'e Stoudemire, Tim Duncan, Al Jefferson.  Apparently the game thinks Big Al is going to do very well in Utah.
  • All-NBA 3rd Team: Stephen Jackson, Manu Ginobili, Dirk Nowitzki, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Kaman.  Again with the Cap'n Jack love, and Kaman over guys like Brook Lopez, Al Horford and David Lee? You crazy, 2K.
  • All-Defensive 1st Team: Dwyane Wade, Manu Ginobili, Josh Smith, Gerald Wallace, Dwight Howard.  Interesting with Ginobili there.  He'll have to be healthy to manage it.
  • All-Defensive 2nd Team: Rajon Rondo, Jason Kidd, Tim Duncan, LeBron James, Marcus Camby.  Ok you lost me 2K with the Jason Kidd choice.  Anybody who has watched him the last couple years can see he's a step slower on defense and is becoming a bit of a liability on that end.  Other choices are solid though.

Playoffs:
The Playoffs end up with the Lakers and Spurs facing off in the West, and the Celtics and Heat matching up in the East.  Boston beats Miami in a seven game series, and the Spurs trump the Lakers in six.  The Celtics than beat San Antonio in six to win their 18th NBA Championship.  Paul Pierce is named the NBA Finals MVP.

Overall 2K11 has some solid predictions, and some rather silly ones.  The game itself is damn fun and addicting though.  We'll throw up a review sometime in the next few weeks.
